Tips to keep your pet's weight in-check over winter

Happy New Year!

2019 is in full swing and with that comes New Year's resolutions. Many of us start the new year fresh vowing to lose weight, be more active, and take more "me" time. These resolutions apply to our furry friends at home as well!

Just like us, our pets tend to gain weight in the winter months due to less activity. Less activity with the same amount of food/calories = weight gain!

Here are a few tips to help keep your pets weight in-check:

1. Portion Control: Start by measuring out your pet's food on a daily basis according to their current weight. This is an important nutrition tip regardless of the time of year! If you are unsure how much your cat or dog should be getting a day, we can make a nutrition plan for your cat or dog based on their current weight and weight goals.

2. Get Active: Plan a daily walk or visit the dog park! It’s good for both of you to get outside and get moving. For our feline friends' get them moving by chasing a laser or their favourite toy! Two minutes of play twice a day for your cat is all they need!

3. Limit treats: Treats don't need to be taken out of your pets daily routine just limited. Calories from treats should not exceed 10% of their daily calories.

4. Avoid human food: Although delicious many of our table food is WAY too high in calories and fat for our pets. Not only do they gain weight, the rich food can cause stomach upset and illness.
