SERVICES: Dental Care

Dental care for your pet is just as important as it is for people!

Did you know that dental conditions like periodontal disease are the number one health problem in dogs and cats over 3 years old; affecting about 70% of cats and 80% of dogs?

A routine program of dental care at home is required to ensure that your pet maintains a healthy mouth. Begin brushing your pet’s teeth today!

Even with preventative home care, a veterinarian should evaluate your pet’s dental health at least once a year. Some of the common signs of tooth and gum problems include loss of appetite, red or swollen gums, excessive drooling, discolored, broken or cracked teeth, bad breath, dropping food, and pawing at the mouth. If dental problems are identified, your veterinarian will suggest an appropriate measure of care. Frequently a dental cleaning will be recommended. This procedure involves several steps. Your pet will be given an anesthetic so that we can have good access to the mouth. We will perform a thorough examination of your pet’s mouth, charting any teeth that need to be extracted. A Registered Veterinary Technician will carefully clean the teeth above and below the gum line with hand instruments and ultrasonic scaling. They will finish by gently polishing the teeth, smoothing the surface to prevent further plaque from sticking.  We provide before and after photos of your pet’s dental care.

Digital dental x-rays are an essential tool in diagnostics of an animal's mouth. They help us determine if a tooth is still healthy, by showing us if there is bone loss, or if abscesses are starting to form at the root of the tooth. They also aid us in the extraction process, to see the root before we extract so we know if a root is curved and how long it is.

If you are concerned about your pet’s teeth, please book an appointment for a veterinary exam and consultation.
